Prior knowledge of GIS is desirable, but not required. A map is more than a simple overview of a place, region, or location. In addition to displaying information, each card has its own story. To enhance the power of this message, it is important that a map is attractive for viewing. You must invite a card to discover the subject in question. ESRI, the makers of the widely used GIS package ArcGIS, offer the possibility to create internet maps. With the help of these storymaps, texts, photos and maps on an internet page can easily be combined. Let the cards tell the story themselves and start making storymaps!

A number of web apps will be created during this course. It is not necessary to have programming knowledge to create these web apps, because templates can be used to create these applications easily. In addition, the large number of examples makes it possible to bring the story behind the map to life with a unique web app. In addition to combining texts, photos and images, the options for presenting information in a map will also be discussed. After map layers have been added, questions such as: "What should a map display and what not?", "How can I change the colors of a map?" and "What information do I want to show in text labels and annotations?" asked and answered during this course.

After this course you will be able to create storymaps for self-chosen topics and you can immediately start telling stories using cards.

Learning objectives course:

  • Combining texts, photos and maps to present a topic.
  • Making storymaps using available templates.
  • Setting clear cards with text labels and annotations.
