Java is an object oriented programming language. Java is a cross-platform language, which in terms of syntax is largely based on the (also object-oriented) programming language C++. Java, however, has a more extensive class library than C++.
Initially they wanted to promote Java as a programming language for all kinds of electronic devices, such as televisions, remote controls and refrigerators. But as the World Wide Web gained popularity, Sun figured out they could use their (still not too popular) language in a web environment. Thanks to the open specification and the possibility to embed a Java program as an applet in a web page (also known as “embedding”), the hype was quickly created.
On November 13, 2006, Sun released parts of Java as open source software, under the GNU General Public License (GPL). On May 8, 2007, Sun released the last parts of Java under the GPL, with the exception of a few minor areas where Sun is not copyrighted.
